The SUNSHINE BOY (2017)
Inspired by real events, the film explores a mother's realisation behind her son's psychological thoughts, moments before a tragic event.
This was my senior undergraduate film at Goldsmiths in 2016/2017. I was heavily immersed in the discourse around gun violence and wanted to tell the story from the perspective of the perpetrator and his mother. The story takes a lot of inspiration from Sue Klebold’s memoir ‘A Mother’s Reckoning’. Her son Dylan was one of the two Columbine shooters in 1999. I delved into his journals which were made public and really saw the sensitivity his mother would later discuss in her book; making it really difficult to understand how she could have known her son’s darkness was hidden behind a mask.
